A note from the artist: It is said a long time ago some incident took place in the land called Aqiggituuq in the area between the communities of Akulivik and Ivujivik. People lived there in the winter.

This is a true story. Aukkaut and a boy Kumainnaq’s son were out hunting birds (pitseolak) by the sea. Aukkaut accidentally shot and across the water the boy died. Then Kumainnaq got angry and murdered all of Aukkautik’s family members. Then Kumainnaq got angry and murdered all of Aukkautik’s family members. Then there was a battle with Kumainnaq. As he entered and was stabbed in the butt by Aukkaut, and then everybody fled.

One of the people fleeing arrived to the people living in Iyaittuit wounded on his leg and then it was heard that Aukkut was being a terror in Aqiggituuq. Then a family of three arrived to where he was. When the wife of that family saw blood, she expressed her joy, knowing that she would have a meal, but Aukkaut killed her also, along with the rest of the family who had just arrived.

Many people fled, it is said. Those who fled would tell others what was happening, as they scattered everywhere. This is a carving of Aukkaut collecting his victim’s skull, alone, for nobody could approach him.
