Robert
Rutherford was born in Toronto but now resides in
Musquodobit Harbour, Nova Scotia. He was educated at Trinity
College under printmaker David Blackwood from 1968 - 1972,
Banff School of Fine Arts in 1971 and at L'Ecole des Beuax
Arts in France in 1972-73. He received a scholarship to
study at the Ontario College of Fine Art with Frederick
Hagen in 1973-74. "Several
times a year, I pack my seventeen year old classic
motorcycle with camping gear and explore parts of Atlantic
Canada. When a good subject shows up, I find a quiet hill
and draw for a few hours. No photographs. The image is
translated in the oldest, most direct language of symbols",
he explains. The wide
angle world of Robert Rutherford's prints seem to filter out
all but the most essential lines and details, so that each
element, whether wind or sail, hillside or house, share the
same organic simplicity. Robert simplifies and repeats the
fundamental shapes of his world to create an effect almost
visionary in its dramatic, expansive evocation of sea, sky
and shoreline. Robert has
exhibited widely, and is represented in numerous public and
private collections. He has also received several comissions
for large murals, stage sets and record covers. He captures
the landscape of Nova Scotia and beyond in all it's
diversity. His images exist on the same plane as a vivid
memory, leaving only what is truly meant to be
seen.
Houston
North Gallery has been representing Robert Rutherford for
several years.
